As water temperatures fall below about 15C the risks, particularly hypothermia, increase exponentially.

The rules of the Freedom Swim are very strict. Should average water temperature on the day fall below 11C then the swim will be cancelled. Should the average temperature fall below 12C, skins will need to swim as a two-person relay.

My cold water swimming mantra is to ‘swim within my limits’. I like to push my limits but there are ‘limits to my limits’ and, with this swim, I expect to find these limits. It will test me and at every level.

Should I be in any distress or difficulty during the swim I have given myself permission to withdraw, learn from the experience and keep the finish of the Freedom Swim for another time.
