‘Persistence and determination are omnipotent’, so said Calvin Coolidge the 30th President of the United States.

To give the phrase full effect, I set up a boot-camp involving a weekly swim of 12kms, outdoor cold showers and ice baths as well as daily gym circuits. Initially, these cold showers, in the depths of a Melbourne winter, gave me an extreme ice-cream headache but after a week or so, through breathing and relaxing techniques, the pain subsided and the cold became bearable. Nevertheless, it’s a wild way to start to the day.

Swimming The Rock is usually undertaken left to right in the above picture. I should have a nice view of the Golden Gate Bridge on my right hand side and the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge on my left. The water will be about 15C and the crossing should take between two and three hours.
